³⁶The Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.

Genesis 37:36World English Bible, Protestant Edition

The scene

The Midianites sell the young man in Egypt to Potiphar, Pharaoh’s officer and captain of the guard.

To understand

The previous line describes his father weeping and refusing comfort. The narrative then reports the sale in Egypt, so the reader sees an event beyond the grieving father’s knowledge in that scene.

A question

How does the report from Egypt change what the reader knows while the father mourns?
