⁵even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—

Ephesians 2:5World English Bible, Protestant Edition

The scene

The letter describes God giving life with Christ to people who were dead in their trespasses.

To understand

The preceding verse names God’s mercy and love; the following one continues with being raised and seated with Christ. The sentence places God’s action before the recipients’ description of being saved by grace.

A question

Who acts in this sentence, and what condition are the recipients in when that action begins?
