⁴The LORD spoke with you face to face on the mountain out of the middle of the fire,

Deuteronomy 5:4World English Bible, Protestant Edition

The scene

Moses recalls the LORD speaking to the people face to face on the mountain, from within the fire.

To understand

Verse 3 addresses the people alive to hear Moses. Verse 5 says he stood between them and the LORD because they feared the fire and did not go up the mountain.

A question

How does Moses' position between the people and the LORD fit this account of speaking face to face?
